3D Printing for Developers

Using 3D printing to replace broken components is a cost-effective method during product development.

The process is straightforward. This document provides an unofficial guide for 3D printing.
If you have attended related courses (e.g., sähköpaja), some of these concepts may already be familiar.

1. Minimal Flow (Updated Spring 2026)

  1. Check the instructions from Design Factory:
    https://designfactory.aalto.fi/facilities/printshop/

  2. Obtain the blueprint (.stl file) of the component.

  3. Send a print request via email to:
    printshop-df@aalto.fi
    • Attach the .stl file
    • The staff will process the request
  4. Wait for completion or follow further instructions from staff.

  5. Pick up the printed object.

    Location:
    Room B143b
    Puumiehenkuja 5, 02150, Espoo

    Note:
    Check opening hours before arrival.

2. Notes on Printing

  • 3D printing is slow
    • Large prints may take overnight
  • Printing may fail
  • Queue times can be long

3. Advice

3.1 Alternative Printing Facilities

Use Design Factory first:

  • Free
  • Reliable
  • Suitable for most needs

Other options:

  • School of Electricity
    https://vilhonpaja.aalto.fi/en

  • School of Arts
    https://www.aalto.fi/en/arts-infra-workshops/3d-print

Notes:

  • Access may not be guaranteed
  • You may need permission from staff

Additional options:

  • Municipal libraries
    • Varaamo Helsinki (~€2)
    • Varaamo Espoo (lower resolution, ~0.40 mm)

3.2 Customize Your Own Blueprint

Before creating your own model, check existing designs:

If needed, create your own blueprint using:

  • Blender
  • OpenSCAD
  • Onshape

Recommendation:

  • Use Onshape if no prior CAD experience
  • Free student license available

Design tip:

  • Leave ~0.2 mm tolerance at connection points

Ensure compatibility with Cura-supported file types:

Consider environmental impact when selecting materials

3.4 Miscellaneous

  • Safety first
    • Use gloves when assembling components
  • Check available storage before printing
    • Excessive printing can create storage issues
  • Ask staff for help when needed
    • They are usually available and willing to assist
